A lot of people ask us how we manage to source so many discounts and promo codes. Here’s our secret: First, we have an entire team of caffeine-addicted millennials that scour the internet for the best mattress deals, pretty much on a daily basis. We know where and when to look in order to score major discounts. So, as easy as we make it look, it’s really just that we offer free coffee in the office and have quite a few people that keep their eyes peeled at all times. We’re attentive and persistent and overly familiar with the internet. Really, that’s the gist of it. We don’t use some fancy algorithm or quantum super computer, we just have a good group of good people that work hard (and sleep hard, for the record).
We also directly contact certain brands and retailers to procure exclusive deals that, in many cases, you can only get through the Slumber Yard. We're sort of like your outsourced team of knuckle-cracking wallet watchers that actively go get you deals. Sometimes we’re able to secure year-round discounts, but in other cases, we can only manage limited time offers. In either case, however, you save money, which is the whole goal of this. In the event that you (somehow) found a better discount, please do email us. We need to know!
This probably won’t come as any surprise to you, but a lot of brands and retailers set prices artificially high, knowing that they will always offer a discount. GhostBed and Leesa Mattress are two that come to mind here. This is also the reason that if we throw out a deal from them, it typically doesn’t have a coupon attached. That’s because they offer a discount to basically anyone at anytime that visits their website. It looks enticing and the discount will go up and down throughout the year, but it’s generally not novel in the sense that they will be running a promotion nearly 24/7. This isn’t to say that it’s a bad pricing strategy—it clearly works—but you shouldn’t be overly enamored with a $100 off promotion that expires today. Chances are it will be extended or run indefinitely.
Amazon Mattress Deals
Quicker Shipping
A lot of these brands also sell their mattresses via Amazon. It’s usually the online brands that do it, not so much the Sleep Number or Serta’s of the world. You’ll see Zinus and others that really sell a lot via Amazon. Even Bear Mattress sells their bed on Amazon, though the discounts are typically much better directly through the brand. Amazon generally affords you quicker shipping, especially with Prime, but not typically the largest discounts. Therefore, if you want the mattress quickly (usually 3-5 days), Amazon is a great place to look. Otherwise, you’re probably better going through the actual brand website.
Using Promo Codes In Store
Ask the Store First
We haven’t seen a lot of brands offer in-store coupons. Casper, Leesa, and Purple all now sell in stores, but we haven’t seen a promo code that applies at the actual point of sale. For the record, Tuft & Needle also now sells their bed at Lowe’s and other brands are starting to follow suit. Point is, you’ll still likely get a better deal online, but it doesn’t hurt to try them out in-store or ask if the discounts can be matched. Since you’ve got another party involved (the retailer), it would be tough to expect pricing and discounts to be exactly the same.
Save Money with Mattress Bundles
Save Year Round
Even though holidays are the best time to buy a bed, you can save extra money year-round by seeking out bundles. Not all brands or retailers offer discounts via bundles, but a lot of them do. Purple Mattress, for example, doesn’t offer straight discounts, but they do bundle in pillows and other items. They also sometimes cut the price of a bed frame if you get that with a new mattress. Other brands, such as Casper Mattress, will increase discounts when you spend more. So, they might not offer much in the way of a discount on their mattress, but they will increase that discount as the total cart value increases (i.e. you add in sheets, pillows, etc.).
Getting the Steepest Mattress Discounts
The Bottom Line
Mattresses follow the typical retail cycle in that Black Friday is the best time to score a major discount. Having said that, other major holidays, such as 4th of July, Presidents' Day, and Veterans Day, often bring about huge mattress sales events. Therefore, if you can wait until the next major holiday, you should consider doing so since the discounts could go even deeper. Usually, they’ll throw in a free pillow, sheet set, or seat cushion on top of a direct discount. Here’s a good rule of thumb: if you don’t see a discount on the brand’s website, check this exact page before you buy. A lot of times, we will have a discount for you.
RETURN POLICIES
We include this section in almost every post because buyer’s remorse sucks. Most online brands come with very lax return policies. Usually, you’ll get a 100+ night window where you can test the bed for yourself to see if it’s the mattress that you’d like to sleep on for the next seven years at minimum. Some brick-and-mortar retailers offer return policies, as well, but they’re typically not as consumer friendly because they don’t have as much wiggle room in terms of margins. About the only online mattress brand that we’ve seen not offer 100% free returns is Saatva, Zenhaven, and Loom & Leaf, which assess a $99 return fee to cover removal and transportation costs. It’s not egregious, but it’s not as favorable as what DreamCloud offers, for example. Just pay attention and ask about return policies and trial periods. Do not buy a mattress that doesn’t come with at least a 90-night trial period. You need a few weeks to adjust to the bed and vet it for yourself.
Equally important to the return policy and trial period that comes with your mattress is its warranty. Who wants to buy a mattress on crazy discount, but that falls apart after a year? Not us. Not anyone. Therefore, you should always check the warranties and read them diligently. Usually, they will discuss issues related to sagging or cracking/fraying of materials. These would obviously trigger a warranty event. Most brands offer a 10-year or longer warranty. If they’re longer, however, they usually have some sort of tiered structure where the first 10 years are fairly straightforward, but after that, they tighten requirements for returns and replacements.
Novosbed, for example, offers a 15-year warranty, but after year 10 ,the rules become a little more strict. This isn’t bad or unusual, but it is something worth looking into. Just so you know, the typical bed-in-a-box mattress brand expects their bed to soften over time, but a 3/4” to 1” indentation without any weight on the bed is what would result in a warranty claim. If your bed sags, call the company up and get your money back. They’ll make sure your foundation was supportive and met their requirements, but beyond that, you should either get a replacement or a fully repaired or re-covered bed.
This is mostly what we do at the Slumber Yard—review and compare mattresses and bedding products. We have posted dozens of mattress reviews and mattress comparisons from some of the biggest (and smallest) brands out there, including some that primarily sell in-store and others that exclusively sell online. And we’re constantly testing new products and updating our existing content. As an example, if we test a new bed and feel as if it’s a standout in terms of coolness, we may put it on our Best Mattress for Hot Sleepers list. Or if we learn something new about the Helix Sleep Mattress, for example, we would probably go and update our related comparisons and best lists, as necessary. We try to be diligent and timely with all of our reviews and updates. But, of course, if you notice something that needs to be changed, make sure to reach out to us.
So we find or procure deals, but how often are we getting new deals and updating existing ones? Generally, we go through our list of deals on a daily basis. However, during major holidays, we are particularly active. We have seen certain brands and retailers ratchet up their discounts during holidays (e.g. Labor Day, etc.) and we don’t want to miss the opportunity to save even more money. All this is to say that we can’t 100% guarantee that these are the best and most up-to-date deals, but we do work nearly every day on this stuff.
DO YOU NEED TO BUY NOW?
No! Unless we specifically note that the deal ends today we either (1) expect it to continue or (2) we don’t know when it will end. Usually, the deals start and have some sort of expected ending date. Often times, though, the expiration date will be extended. This happens a lot during major holidays. The deals will start early and run until the brand or store can’t justify the sale anymore. We’ve seen certain deals run from Black Friday all the way through the new year, as they keep getting extended and extended. Therefore, if you’re really concerned that a deal will expire today, you can contact us to ask or inquire further by reading the fine print on the brand’s or store’s website.
Mattress shopping can be intimidating and somewhat daunting. That’s why we created our Mattress Finder Quiz, which should help you narrow your list from dozens of beds to a select few. We go over questions related to feel, temperature, price, and more. We really believe in this tool and we think it’s going to be very helpful for consumers.
In the event that you want additional details, we’ve also published a post all about choosing a mattress. We put a lot of time into that post and it should be very helpful for you. In addition, it may be helpful to go into a store to test beds for yourself before you purchase. This is particularly helpful if you aren’t familiar with the various materials. For example, memory foam is a love-or-hate thing. But if you haven’t tested it for yourself it could shock you a bit. As such, laying on a few different beds in one shopping trip is a good way to flesh out what you like and don’t like. Of course, if you’ve already identified your preferred materials, shopping online should be no problem, especially if the brand offers free returns.
We’ve done this before! We also operate another very popular website that gets hundreds of thousands of visitors per month. It too has exclusive deals that are updated daily. We basically used the same model here at the Slumber Yard: hunt and source. We scour the web for great deals and we (politely) beat down the doors of brands and stores to get exclusive discounts.
DEALS ON PILLOWS & MORE
Most of the time we see larger discounts on mattresses, but occasionally brands will offer promotions on pillows. We’ve seen Sealy offer two-for-one specials in the past. We’ve seen Layla Sleep offer a coupon code on their pillow. And we’ve seen Nectar bundle in pillows with each mattress (this is their typical promotion). If we do see deals on pillows, sheets, bed frames, adjustable bed frames, etc., we will try to post it here or within the most relevant piece of content. We also, from time to time, get coupons for budget bedding products on Amazon, but those are typically from lesser-known brands. As such, if you aren’t really married to one brand, you may check to see if we’ve posted any of those coupons because they are usually large discounts on already affordable products.
In addition to reviewing beds, the Slumber Yard team also sources the best discounts and coupon codes you’ll ever find on mattresses and other bedding products. Click the link below to check out what deals we’ve found today.
